As with all things ancient, they were once new. In the context of the song, "rocking 'round the Christmas Tree" will be old fashioned, and since this song is older than I am, it was indeed a self fulfilling prophesy....you asked...
I think they were proclaiming that the song would be infamous, so when it was written it was talking about how it would be in the future. Or what he said. :)Merry Christmas!
